I'll be taking a break from blog posts through October, since the studio workload has gotten a bit overwhelming. Nice to have some stimulating projects to work on, and I hope to be back soon with some fresh sketches. Thanks for stopping by, and stay tuned . . . .

I find myself switching between drawing/shading with the pencil point, (left page) and the side of the pencil (right page). Not sure which I like best, but allows for some variety. Side of the pencil feels more like painting, since you're using a wedge shape to lay in the values.

I'm out of town for a few days, so I've made a few days posts in advance. Back soon, probably with a few more drawings done on the plane.

Here are some one-minute warm-up sketches from that same coffee shop drawing session. (see Aug 20 posting)

I went to a life drawing session at a local trendy coffee shop where the models wore 50's type lingerie and hairstyles. It was a nice change of pace, and accordingly I tried a different drawing style, more of a "continuous line" technique. Not sure about it yet, but I may try it a few more times.

August 11, 2010 - The Beauty of the Sketchbook . . .
I carry a small (4 x 6") sketchbook with me at all times. I tell students: as long as you have a sketchbook, you never have downtime. Waiting room at the dentist becomes sketch time. Sitting outside pre-school to pick up my son . . sketch time.
